BERLIN TWP., Ohio -- There were some scary moments at an Amish attraction in Holmes County Saturday.

Twelve people were injured after a small train derailed suddenly during a public farm tour.

Investigators spent most of Saturday trying to figure out the details of the accident at Schrock's Amish Farm and Village, which is just off state Route 39.

Authorities told Fox 8 the train separated from the track at a switch crossing, causing the derailment moments later. steve1

"On a holiday there's a lot of people, and it was something unexpected," said Steve Welday, who snapped pictures of the accident scene. "There were paramedics and firemen working on people all over the area."

The accident happened around 3:30 p.m. The train car's passengers were ejected as it fell over.

EMS crews from East Holmes Fire and EMS, Sugar Creek Fire and EMS, Winesburg Fire and EMS, and Holmes Fire District No. 1 responded to the scene to assist the injured.

Six victims were taken to Joel Pomerene Hospital. Their conditions are unknown. Six others were taken to Dover-Union Hospital with minor injuries.

No victims were reported trapped or needed mechanical extrication because of the derailment.

Many people who heard about the accident are saddened, because they love to visit Schrock's. On this Memorial Day weekend, they are just hoping that everyone involved in the accident is recovering well.

"This is a great place, and nothing's ever perfect," said visitor Ladora Brewer.

Witnesses said the train was only going about five miles per hour when the accident happened.

But the shock of the derailment, and the fact that people were ejected made the scene emotional for people involved.

Inspectors from the Ohio Department of Agriculture Division of Rides and Amusements along Holmes County deputies are still investigating the incident.
