BAY VILLAGE- Shovel or pay. Days after Northeast Ohio's first major snow event many sidewalks still need to be shoveled.
Bay Village Police are reminding residents that shoveling sidewalks is the law. Breaking it will result in fines, failure to comply after repeat citations could result in jail time.
"It's complaint-driven we don't go out and look for people to warn," said Lt. Calvin Holliday with Bay Village Police. "Usually after snow fall there are so many sidewalks that need to be done."
People forced to walk on the snow-covered sidewalks say they wish some homeowners and businesses would be more thoughtful.
"You wish the walks could get cleaner," said John Goodell. "It's the really slick ice, I worry about my wife falling."
Homeowners Fox 8 talked to say the law is good to enforce as long as mass citations are not issued.
"It's a good law but they should not be too pushy about it either," said Albert Dispenza.
Shoveling snow-covered sidewalks is the law in Cleveland and many other area suburbs
