ORWELL, Ohio -- A 27-year-old woman has died in a house explosion on Montgomery Road in Orwell, Wednesday night.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol told FOX 8's Kevin Freeman that the family had been smelling gas for a couple of weeks.

Authorities said a man went upstairs on Wednesday and lit a cigarette and that's when the house exploded; he was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.

Ashtabula County Sheriff Bill Johnson confirmed the explosion first to FOX 8's Peggy Sinkovich.

People who live in the area report that they felt the blast five miles away.
