MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A little girl is recovering after nearly drowning in a hotel pool, then being attended to by sequestered jurors.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were escorting a sequestered jury into the Double Tree Hotel on Sanderlin the evening of May 17.

The deputies said when they arrived they heard several people screaming for help in the hotel lobby.

They were told there was a child by the pool that had, “…apparently drowned and was unresponsive.”

We’re told two jurors, Dr. Jora Best and Registered nurse, Sheila Dalieymple went into action.

CPR was performed on 6-year old Shawanda Birdse who was then taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

We are told the child is doing well and expected to fully recover.

The Sheriff’s Office thanked Dr. Jora and nurse Dalieymple as well as Deputies Amy Chaffin and Steve Perry for their quick thinking and action.
