CLEVELAND- Four men were sentenced on Friday in the murder of Cleveland Heights bar owner Jim Brennan.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Maureen Clancy sentenced Paul Turner to 11 years, Devonne Turner to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 37 years, Brandon Jones to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years and Darien Jones to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 37 years. The four suspects pleaded guilty to their roles in the deadly shooting and robbery.

“You didn’t have to kill him. That even if you went in to just rob him, you didn’t have to shoot him. And you didn’t have to shoot him three times," Judge Clancy said to Darien Jones, the shooter.

Prosecutors said Devonne Turner and Darien Jones entered Brennan's Colony on June 30 to rob it, and forced employees Richard Wise and Brandon Jones into the basement. Brandon Jones acted like an innocent victim when he actually organized the crime, prosecuting attorneys said.

Darien Jones was trying to get Brennan, 61, downstairs to open the safe when the bar owner tried to run. Prosecutors said Darien Jones shot Brennan in the hip and arm, before shooting him in the head.

Hearing the gunshot, Devonne Turner ran upstairs and jumped over Brennan's body.

“Jimmy was a man who all he ever did was help people," Wise told the judge on Friday. He said he thought that Brandon Jones was experiencing the nightmare with him, but instead, he was an accomplice who could have stopped the robbery at any time. "You are cowards and cowards will burn."

"These men came with bandanas and guns, set on evil," said Mary Ellen Brennan, Jim Brennan's sister.

Police later found the murder weapon under Paul Turner's bed. The Turners were also sentenced for two separate cases where they attacked a woman and beat a man who tried to intervene, and robbed a gas station.
