COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio lawmaker wants women to be required to register for military Selective Service.

State Sen. Eric Kearney said in a statement Monday that he would introduce a resolution in the Ohio Senate urging Congress to require women to register along with men.

The Democrat from Cincinnati says the change is needed to help women achieve equality in the U.S. military. The Defense Department last year ended a rule that had excluded women from direct combat roles.

The Selective Service website says almost all men ages 18 through 25 are required to register but are not automatically inducted into the military.

Registrants would be called in sequence determined by random lottery number and year of birth in the event of a crisis requiring a draft.
