AKRON, Ohio - A security guard for Summa Health System is undergoing surgery after police say he was stabbed multiple times inside St. Thomas Hospital Tuesday night.

Akron police got the call just after 7 pm.

Police said the 54-year-old security guard was working the psych ward at St. Thomas when a 33-year-old patient was brought in from Akron City Hospital.

The security guard was working unarmed.

Police said the suspect had hidden knives on him, and managed to stab the security guard in the neck and the abdomen. Hospital staff immediately rushed to get the suspect off of the guard, who lost a lot of blood.

The security guard was rushed to Akron General Hospital. There is no update on his condition at this time.

Police said the suspect was taken into custody, however, no charges have been filed.

Police said there were no other injuries in the attack.

Summa Health System, which owns St. Thomas, released the following statement:

"I can confirm that a member of our security team was injured this evening during an unprovoked incident with a patient and is currently being treated for his injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with our officer and his family. We will provide additional details as they become available."
