ELYRIA, Ohio -- For the second time in as many years, the Elyria School Board has to cut $3 million from the budget.  That means 37 teachers will lose their job and security around the schools will be affected.

"Even though we made these cuts, it would sound as though we are okay with them and we're not, we need these people that we've had to cut but you have to pay the bills at the end of the day," said Elyria School Superintendent Paul Rigda.

The Elyria School Board has to cut $3 million from its budget as a result of failed mill levy last year.

"Why is it always the education we want to start cutting on? You can't spend your way out of poverty like our government seems to think you can," said Connie Gibson, who works in Elyria.

As a result of the cuts, 59 positions will be eliminated, including 37 teacher positions.  What this means is larger class numbers.

"The core areas where the enrollment has been substantial, we've kept all those courses and then where the electives in those core areas have been lean, we've eliminated those sections," said Rigda.

Part of the $3 million in cuts will include contracts with security services and attendance monitors which will equal about $94,000.

"So you monitor, monitor says okay, you have a tape of it but it doesn't step in and help prevent injury and that's our biggest concern," said Gibson.

In addition, the school television program will be cut and all seventh grade sports teams will be eliminated.  Students will be able to try out for the 8th grade teams.

"Having been an ex-coach in college and high school and junior high school level, 7th grade is a feeder, so-to-speak, so it hurts," said Elyria resident Peter Aldrich.

Everyone hopes these are the final cuts the school board has to make.  The news is getting tougher and tougher to take every year.
