CLEVELAND – The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department kicked-off a Fourth of July safety initiative on Tuesday after 10 new deputies were sworn-in.

“Just really happy for him and he did great, he was all ready for this - he was ready for this forever,” said Meredith Love from Elyria. Her husband, Donald, was one of those at North Coast Harbor who took the oath to serve and protect.

“I feel it's a privilege to serve the community in a law enforcement capacity,” said Deputy Love, “it’s just a passion that I have, my wife knows about it, she’s very familiar with that.”

The new members of the department are hitting the ground running after a new effort was announced to prevent problems on Lake Erie, local roads and even bike lanes.

Beginning this week, law enforcement officers will be everywhere, according to Sheriff Frank Bova.

“My only concern is that everyone throughout the county has a safe, fun, obviously Fourth of July and a safe, fun summer,” said the sheriff.

Part of the safety plan always includes any potential threat on Lake Erie, not just from someone boating and drinking at the same time, but any threat that could come across the border from Canada.

“We have a federal responsibility and we get some federal funds to help us maintain security on our northern border,” said County Executive Ed FitzGerald.

Cuyahoga County has jurisdiction on the international border in the water and on any given day, thousands of boats are on the lake.

Sheriff Bova said they’re watching closely and even more so this week to ensure a safe holiday.

“You just don’t know when something may happen - may not happen - but we’re on top of it every day,” said the sheriff.
