SANDUSKY, Ohio– Cedar Point said several passengers were evaluated for injuries and one taken to the hospital Friday night, after the Shoot the Rapids ride malfunctioned.

Just after 6:30 p.m., operators stopped the ride after park officials said a boat rolled back down the lift hill.

Matthew Orr said he and his girlfriend, Brittany Dean, has just got off the ride and were exiting when they heard the loud grinding sound from the boat falling backwards.

So, they turned around to look. “You could literally see the boat flipped over. So, then me and a bunch of other people just jumped over and was trying to help lift the boat, tilt it, because people were still in the boat trapped,” Orr said.

All seven guests on the boat got checked out at the park’s first aid station.

Six were evaluated by Cedar Point EMS staff and released.

The guest who was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky for further evaluation was released Friday night.

In a press release, Cedar Point said, “The safety of our guests is our number one priority.”

The incident was reported to state of Ohio officials.

Shoot the Rapids will remain closed until a review is complete.
