BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — A Bay Square restaurant says it was scammed by a fake electric company employee.
According to Bay Village police, a business owner received a call from a man who identified himself as an Illuminating Company representative.
He told the owner she had not paid her electric bill, and that the power would be turned off if it was not paid immediately.
The woman paid her bill online earlier in the week, but wasn’t sure it went through. That’s when, according to police, the phony worker advised her to buy a pre-paid credit card, tell him the numbers, then make another payment.
Later, when the business owner checked on her payment, she saw that her original payment had gone through, and that she had been scammed.
Since then, FirstEnergy Corp. has released a warning to its customers:
“Customers should know that if they get a call from someone demanding payment of their electric bill by using a Green Dot card they are being scammed and should report the crime to local authorities. While we may phone a customer whose bill is in arrears in order to remind them that a payment is due, we would explain how a payment can be made using established payment options.”
