Joan Rivers tells TMZ that she will not apologize for a comment she made about Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus on the “Today” show Tuesday.
The TV host and comedian was asked what it’s like to live under the same roof as her daughter, Melissa. Rivers answered, “Those women in the basement of Cleveland have more space.”
The three women were held captive for more than a decade in a Seymour Avenue home.
After the ‘Today’ show anchors didn’t know how to respond, Rivers asked, “Too soon?”
Attorneys for Berry and DeJesus released a statement Wednesday in response to the comment.
The statement in its entirety is as follows:
“Our clients have become aware of Joan Rivers’ unfortunate comparison of living in her daughter’s guest room to their captivity. We understand that Ms. Rivers is a comedienne; however, the idea that a celebrity would say something this hurtful, on national television no less, is beyond shocking and disappointing. Our clients are strong, private women who have endured unwanted and often painful media attention for quite some time. They now have to endure this, which is a new low, and we believe a sincere apology is warranted.”
Wednesday afternoon, TMZ reported that Rivers said the girls shouldn’t complain; “they got to live rent free for more than a decade.”
TMZ also reported that Rivers said she won’t apologize and told the girls to lighten up, adding, “One of them has a book deal. Neither are in a psych ward. They’re ok. I bet you within 3 years one of them will be on Dancing with the Stars.”
