NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio -- Outraged animal lovers marched through North Ridgeville Wednesday to protest the shooting of five feral kittens by a North Ridgeville humane officer Monday afternoon.

"We want to let the city of North Ridgeville know that we support them in their anger for the killing of those kittens by an inhumane officer," said Patricia Fogo, who organized the event.

Members of the Pooch Patrol, along with outraged residents, walked in demonstration against humane officer, Barry Accorti.

Accorti shot and killed five kittens behind a family’s home on Vista Lake Way while the family was inside.

"It was a senseless act that Officer Accorti to pull out a gun and shoot five helpless kittens. There certainly were other options available," said Scott Benjamin of North Ridgeville.

But according to the North Ridgeville police chief, the shooting was justified.

The chief said Accorti was called following a complaint by the homeowner herself and that feral cats need to be "managed."

However, some people think it could have been managed differently.

"All he needed to do is put on a pair of gloves and grab them and put them in his truck. There are three veterinarians in town. He could have drove them there and had them humanely euthanized instead of shooting them in front of those children," said Kelly Smick of North Ridgeville.

Now the Ohio ASPCA is calling for the officer to face criminal charges.

"If we can get the law enforcement, especially our humane officers, to obey what we consider humane practices, how can we get the average citizen to do it?" said Mike Smick, with the Nitro Foundation.

The Ohio ASPCA is in the process of sending an official request that Officer Accorti be disciplined and relieved of his duties as a humane officer immediately.

The Friendship Animal Protection League is also investigating.
