CLEVELAND – The line formed Monday morning with people passing 12-packs of bottled water down to load onto trucks.

Even though the effort was taking place in front of the Cleveland Police Patrolman’s Association headquarters on the near west side of Cleveland, many of the volunteers were not police officers.

“Many of them live in the neighborhood,” said Steve Loomis, the president of the CPPA.

The spirit to help the police continues after a successful Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

The police union received so many donations, everything from bottled water to sunscreen, that it had a lot left over.

“We promised the citizens of Cleveland we’d put it to good use,” Loomis said.

So the volunteers were packing the trucks to drive the supplies to Philadelphia to be used by officers guarding this week’s Democratic National Convention.

Cleveland police and officers who came to town from around the nation are receiving high praise for keeping last week’s convention safe and friendly.

“Talk to everyone like they’re your grandmother,” Loomis said.

And he has one more message for everyone who made a donation.

“Thank you, Cleveland.”
