LORAIN, Ohio — Three people were treated for injuries at the hospital and then released after an explosion at Republic Steel.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. Monday.

The plant is located on East 28th Street in Lorain.

Republic Steel released a statement that said:

“(Monday) morning, Republic Steel experienced an explosion in our melt shop when restarting the furnace after being shut down over the weekend. The Lorain Fire Department was called and assisted with the situation. Three employees were transported to Mercy Hospital for treatment of burns and other injuries; two of those employees have been treated and released. One employee was treated on-site and released for a minor injury.

“Production in the melt shop has been shut down temporarily while we assess the damage and complete our investigation.  The health and safety of everyone in our facility is always a top priority. We are acting swiftly to put corrective measures in place to prevent future incidents.”

Monday afternoon, Republic Steel said the damage to the melt shop was minimal and they anticipate starting production back up on Tuesday.
