SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — Robert Triozzi, a democratic candidate for Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, said he was doing “fine” several hours after taking a punch to the face at a polling location in Shaker Heights.

“I’m no different than anyone else,” Triozzi told Fox 8 News.  “Occasionally these things happen and today I guess it was my time to withstand this kind of problem.”

Jane Platten, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections Executive Director, tells Fox 8 News’ Bill Sheil that Triozzi was assaulted outside the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Center, located at 3450 Lee Road.

The assault took place around 5:00 p.m., and according to Chief Scott Lee with the Shaker Heights Police Department, the attack was unprovoked.

Lee said that police have a 26-year-old Cleveland man in custody in connection with the assault.

According to Lee the man arrested will undergo a mental evaluation.

Lee said Triozzi denied medical treatment at the scene.

Triozzi later said, “It had nothing to do with this election. I’m large enough, I’m big enough to take a punch.  This is about the future of our county now, this is about the prosecutor’s office, this is about our opportunity to make a big difference.  That’s what this election is about, this is just something on the side that happened to me as it happens to citizens, unfortunately, time and time again.”

Triozzi, who up until last year had served as Cleveland’s Law Director, is on the primary ballot vying to be the Democratic candidate for county prosecutor. That position is being vacated by Bill Mason.

Prior to being named Law Director, Triozzi served for 10 years as a Cleveland Municipal Court Judge.

Triozzi is running against four other candidates, Subodh Chandra, Stephanie Hall, James McDonnell and Timothy McGinty.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer endorsed Triozzi as the best candidate for prosecuting attorney in mid-February.
