Gone are the days when a boy simply asked a girl to the prom.

Now it’s all about how you ask a date to the prom.

The so-called ‘promposal’ can set you back big bucks.

According to a Visa survey published on Yahoo!, the average American teenager spent $324 on promposing. In a majority of cases, parents are picking up the tab.

The pressure is on for students to come up with creative ways to ask their date to the prom. It can involve elaborate costumes, concert tickets, even puppies!

The costs vary depending on where you live. In the Midwest, the average cost is $218. In the South, a promposal will set you back about $305. In New England and to the West, promposals will set you back $431 and $342 respectively.

The Visa survey also found families making less money actually spent more on prom. Families making less than $25,000 spend an average of $1,393 on prom, compared with families who earn over $50,000 spending just $799.
