Nearly one year after his horrific fall, Fox 8′s Stefani Schaefer provided an update on her husband’s condition on Monday.

Roger is recovering from a traumatic brain injury he suffered last year when he fell off of scaffolding.

Stefani has been sharing her journey with viewers on the air and on her Facebook fan page.

Below is Stefani’s latest post to her Facebook fans.

“Hope you are having a good start to your week! What a beautiful day today…. really is starting to feel like spring – finally! Last week I said I would update you on the children’s visit with Roger over the weekend. We were so pleased with how he is doing physically. The last several months Roger suffered so many major setbacks that it really took it’s toll on him physically. This weekend he looked so much stronger and a little “brighter.” Sadly though, Roger still does not really know who we are. When the nurses and therapists work with him, sometimes he’ll be able to say our names but even while we were there, he called us many other, sometimes very “creative and unique” names. His mom came too and was sitting across from him at the table and I asked him if she was there and he said, “no, she hasn’t come to visit yet.” (She had been there for several hours). It is just hard to grasp that he could be looking right at one of us and not know who we are. I asked him who I was and he said that he’s seen me once before but didn’t know my name. We did notice that he mentioned the kids names a few times – mostly while he was talking about other people (so it was out of context) but at least those names are in there floating around. The children are so good with him and it is just so overwhelming to me as I watch them… hugging and loving their dad, even though he seems a million miles away. It’s very common with brain injury for the person to say things they ordinarily wouldn’t say or do… and sometimes Roger says some pretty interesting things… while it can be shocking at times, it seems to make the kids smile and laugh. It’s almost like they “get” his sense of humor – it’s charming to them! There were lots of tears – but also some great laughs at our visit. So, again, as we said goodbye and got in our car, there was so much mixed emotion on the ride home. While the improvements are very slight, they are big to us. But as we’ve been told many times by the experts and doctors… we have a long way to go and now the progress, what he MIGHT gain from here on, might not be enough for him to come home. (because there is also a lot going on medically too). Two weeks away from the year mark of the accident, I am starting to come to terms with this reality. At times, I still have to remind myself to breath… and to keep living. Time is certainly helping with this. I know many of you have experienced loss and grief and I’m sure you’ve all heard that TIME will help to heal the hurt. I have personally found that it wasn’t until I was ready to rely more on God (knowing that I can’t change what has happened or fix things), accept what we’ve been given and know that we have to keep moving ahead, open my heart more to my family and friends, start enjoying their company, being with my children every moment that I can…. and good old fashioned… TIME, it seems with all of these … my new recipe…. the daily struggles seem more routine… more like our “new” normal. So yes, while the hurt and pain are still very fresh and real…. the shock of everything is starting to settle down. Yes, while TIME really does help us heal and it has helped me so much… I also know I am “in a better place” because of ALL OF YOU. The power of faith, family and friends – WOW! You have carried my family through this horrendous year and … we are still standing. BLESS YOU and THANK YOU!”
