In today's Portrait in Black History, we recognize a Cleveland native who has been a trailblazer in public policy in our nation's capitol.

Sharon Smith Holston was born in Cleveland and recently retired after working for the U.S. government for 34 years.

Holston was part of the Nixon administration's welfare reform and was the deputy commissioner of the FDA.

She was twice awarded the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive by President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton.
