AMHERST, Ohio– Two firefighters were taken hostage Wednesday night after they responded to a fire in the woods on Hornyak St. in Amherst, according to Amherst Fire Chief Al Schmitz.

A neighbor called in the fire and Chief Schmitz said as they were fighting the fire, the homeowner became agitated and took the assistant chief and a lieutenant hostage with a rifle.

The call came in just after 6:30 p.m. and was peacefully resolved a couple hours later. Both firefighters are okay; the suspect was taken into custody.

A portion of the Ohio Turnpike in Amherst was shut down as a result of the hostage situation; it was reopened a short time later. Stay with FOX 8 News and fox8.com for any additional information.
