CLEVELAND, Ohio-- FOX 8 has obtained police video from a shootout between Metroparks rangers and a suspect last year that left a ranger wounded and the suspect dead. The Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office just ruled the shooting justified.
The gunfire erupted in the parking garage of the Cleveland city jail. Investigators say Derek Stokes had a hidden handgun. And the video shows even though he was handcuffed in the back seat of a police cruiser, he managed to pull the gun and fire.
A bullet struck Ranger Chelsea McLellan in her bulletproof vest. As she jumped from her cruiser, you can hear her say “Are you (bleep) kidding me?”
That led to a barrage of gunfire. Ranger McLellan and Ranger Kyle Schultz returned fire. Schultz had been following in a separate cruiser.
The video shows Stokes ignoring commands to “Get on the ground!” And you can hear him saying “Kill me.”
Stokes ultimately crawled out of the back seat of the cruiser and started to run through the parking garage with bullets flying. He finally collapsed.
Investigators found the officers fired 47 shots.
Stokes had been arrested during a traffic stop at the East 55th Marina. Rangers found he was wanted on a warrant for burglary, and rangers found Stokes had a bag of cocaine and heroin.
