BEACHWOOD, Ohio — A “large-scale disturbance” by a group of juveniles shut down Beachwood Mall for a few hours Monday evening, Beachwood police confirmed to Fox 8 News.

Police say it happened just after 6:30 p.m.  The disturbance was reportedly organized on social media, but mall security removed them quickly, a news release stated.

No one was injured. Police say one juvenile was arrested for allegedly trying to strike an officer in the commotion.

“One report of gun shots being fired was quickly determined to be unfounded.  Officers from nearby jurisdictions responded to assist to help disperse juveniles in the parking lot,” Beachwood police said.

A police source earlier told the Fox 8 I-Team that some shoppers had been “hiding” in dressing rooms when the incident occurred.  It reportedly started in the food court, which sent people “screaming” out of the mall.

The mall was closed for a period of time, then reopened for the rest of the evening without incident, officials said.

A representative for Beachwood Mall released the following statement Monday evening:

“We are aware of a disturbance that occurred tonight at Beachwood Place that jeopardized the peaceful, safe environment we strive to create for our community. We take these matters very seriously as the well-being of our shoppers and retailers is our number one priority. We are working closely with law enforcement and direct all inquiries to the Beachwood Police Department.”
