MANSFIELD, Ohio- Authorities are investigating after they say a man tried to throw contraband over the fence at the Richland Correctional Institution.

Jawaun Scruggs, 19, of Akron, tried to toss a package to inmates at the facility in Mansfield at about 7:40 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The package contained a semi-automatic handgun, several cell phones and tobacco.

The highway patrol said the package never made it over the fence, so inmates were not able to get their hands on it.

Scruggs is being charged with illegal conveyance of deadly weapons, criminal trespass and illegal conveyance of prohibited items.

The Richland Correctional Institution houses about 2,500 inmates, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.
