PAINESVILLE, Ohio — A Painesville man had to defend himself in the middle of the night, after police said he was the victim of a home invasion.
The crime happened around 3 a.m. on Friday at an apartment on Pearl St.
Authorities told Fox 8 the victim, 54, stabbed the intruder at least twice — once in the arm and once in the chest.
“My boyfriend woke me up and said there’s police cars outside, sirens, everything’s going on,” said Cynthia, a neighbor.
The suspect is a man, 26, and police said he broke in and hit the victim over the head with a weapon while the resident was in his bed.
Police said the victim used a knife near his bed as a weapon against the intruder.
“The individual had several stab wounds. He was taken to Tri Point Hospital by our fire department and then taken to Metro for his injuries,” said Lt. Denise Mercsak of the Painesville Police Department.
Painesville police said the suspect was able to leave the apartment bleeding and he was found outside.
A firearm was later recovered outside of the apartment complex. Neighbors said they watched an officer take all of the bullets out of the weapon.
Both individuals involved in the situation are expected to recover. No charges have been filed against the intruder, therefore his name is not being released.
