Police: Man Injured by Homemade Explosives

ELYRIA, Ohio — An explosion inside an Elyria business left one man injured when he allegedly mixed chemicals to build exploding targets for firearm target practice, the Elyria Police Department confirmed.

The explosion happened Friday around 10 a.m. at Diamond Products on Prospect Avenue.

The injured man was a 50-year-old employee who lives on Whitney Road in LaGrange.

He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland for his unspecified injuries.

Investigators said it’s unclear where the man got the chemicals and he could face criminal charges.

In addition the the police department, the Elyria Fire Department, Lorain County Bomb Squad and ATF agents responded to the emergency.

The area was swept for evidence and has been determined to be safe.

On Saturday, local and federal officials held a press conference to reassure residents living on or near Whitney Road that the area is also safe.
