WESTLAKE, Ohio — A smash and grab robbery was caught on surveillance camera inside a BP at the corner of Detroit Road and Columbia.

The video, released on Thursday to FOX 8 News, shows a brown Chevy Astro backing into the front windows.  Four suspects then struggled with an ATM before eventually loading the cash machine into the van and leaving the scene.

“They took a great deal of precautions to conceal their identities, but that’s why we’re relying on the clothing and particularly the van,” said Captain Guy Turner from the Westlake Police Department.

According to Captain Turner, the suspects tried for approximately 20 minutes to lift the heavy ATM into the back of the van.  The heist happened last Tuesday, May 7, around 4 a.m. when the gas station was closed.

“I don’t know. That’s crazy,” said Houston Gambrell, who works in Westlake.  “I don’t know people would do stuff like that out here though.”

Karen Ksiezyk, who lives in Westlake, said it’s disturbing. “It’s really sad that people are resorting to that – those types of actions; it’s just really upsetting.”

The suspects managed to get away with the machine that had a substantial amount of cash inside, according to investigators.  “It took them several times to break the glass and then also position the van so that it knocked the ATM off its moorings, because it’s secure to the ground,” said Captain Turner.

“We just continue to investigate,” said Turner.  “If anybody recognizes any of those people, the way they were dressed; it’s a Chevy Astrovan, very distinctive, with running boards and a brown stripe down the side.  If you know anybody that was using that for a period of time, we’d like to hear about it.”

The van was recovered on Wednesday, burned-out on a street in Cleveland.  Police said it was stolen and the license plate on the vehicle was also stolen.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the Westlake Police Department, 440-871-3311.
