CLEVELAND -- One man was taken to the hospital after he was shot during a robbery at a local recreation center.
Cleveland police detectives are looking for three suspects. The man who was injured was shot in the leg and was being treated at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, gunfire erupted inside the Cory Recreation Center near East 105th Street and Drexel Avenue.
"Some dudes, they said they were comin’ in the rec to hoop, and then like, they were playing basketball for a few minutes and then they had got done playing and then they went to these dudes in there playing cards and pulled out guns and told them they want all their money," said Otto Smith, 15, who was inside the rec center.
"There were approximately eight to 10 people in the gym playing basketball and playing cards. Two males in black hoodies entered the gym, for a short time they played basketball and then went to a side door and opened it, letting in a third male in a red hoodie," said Sgt. Sammy Morris.
Cleveland police say two of the men pulled out guns.
"While robbing the individuals in the gym, one of the males failed to comply with the orders of the suspect and he was shot once in the leg," said Sgt. Morris.
"He was asking people did the rec have cameras and stuff and people were saying 'no' and then he went up there and shot around a few times and then that's when he pulled out his gun," said Smith.
All three men ran from the rec center. The 37-year old man who was injured was taken to the hospital.
"I feel unsafe here now," said Rayshawn Ingram, 14.
Ironically, the rec center is considered a "safe zone," a place where teens can escape the violence of the streets.
"This is a safe place for us and I be coming here and stuff and it feels safe, I come here after football practice, I come here to do my homework and stuff," said Ingram.
