SANDUSKY, Ohio-- Sandusky police are trying to figure out what happened to an 86-year-old man who was found dead in his basement by firefighters.

"Sandusky fire got a call Tuesday night of a house on fire. They responded; it was an active fire. Firefighters put the fire out, and when they entered the residence, they located a body in the basement," said Detective Sgt. Dana Newell with the Sandusky Police Department.

Police identified the man as George Martin, 86, of Sandusky.

They are investigating his death as a homicide.

"Upon viewing the body, it was obvious the subject had multiple stab wounds," said Sgt. Newell.

Martin's wife was not home at the time of the fire.

No one else was inside.

"Through their investigation, arson investigators noticed several spots where the fire may have come from, which is unusual," added Sgt. Newell.

Sandusky police say it was neighbors who saw the flames then called 911.

Neighbors say George was a good man who gave back to the community. "Him and his wife, they helped out a lot in the community. They held garage sales and stuff like that," said Liberty Valliant, who knew the victim.

And while Sandusky police are trying to figure out who did this, the State Fire Marshal is offering a $5,000 reward for any information on the case.

"It really shocks me because they really nice people. They even gave some stuff to my kids that I came and got from them. I can't believe this happened!" said Valliant.

Police say Martin leaves behind a wife and children.
