ELYRIA, Ohio — When police were called to check on an SUV driving recklessly, they found a man who admitted he was intoxicated — but that man wasn’t the one driving.
The man was in the passenger seat, and a 12-year-old was at the wheel instead.
According to the Elyria Police Department, Scott Staron said he let his son drive because he was “too drunk and needed tools for work that were down the next street.”
Officers said Staron smelled like alcohol when they encountered him Monday around 9 p.m. in the 100 block of Spruce Street. He was arrested for endangering children and disorderly conduct.
On Tuesday, Staron pleaded not guilty to those charges. He is prohibited from drinking any alcohol and must undergo a substance abuse evaluation.
A pretrial for Staron was scheduled for Aug. 10.
