PARMA, Ohio — A 21-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after a standoff with police.

Units were dispatched to State Road and Hetzel Drive around 5:30 a.m. after someone reported the man was breaking windows and yelling inside the building.

When officers arrived, the man claimed he was armed and told them to put their hands up.

They managed to take cover and evacuated residents in nearby apartments.

The man threw a number of items out the window and a pile of debris collected on the lawn below.

“It’s something you don’t see every day, especially in Parma,” neighbor Mary Phillips said.

The SWAT Team and crisis negotiators spoke with the man through the window for a time until there seemed to be no activity inside.

Officers opened his third-floor apartment door and the man retreated into another room, where he continued to hide.

He was finally tased and taken into custody, then taken to Parma Hospital for self-inflicted injuries.

During the commotion, traffic was diverted off of State Road down a side street.

The Parma Police Department said criminal charges are expected.
