AKRON, Ohio —  Local law enforcement will be cracking down on drunk drivers during St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

The Akron Police Department is reminding drivers not to get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking.

Police say it will increase traffic enforcement with the holiday weekend. Officers will be targeting impaired drivers, speed and seat belt violations.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 700 people were killed nationwide in crashes involving a drunk driver during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday from 2006 to 2010.

Also, Akron police want people to know that Main Street, between State and University, will be closed all day Sunday for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the Barley House.
