KENT, Ohio – Danielle O’Banion has coached basketball for 13 years and currently coaches the women’s team at Kent State University, but she now has to prepare for another battle during her third season with the team.

The Golden Flashes enter February with just 3 wins, but this hasn`t exactly been a typical year for Kent State.

“I was surprised as anyone else when I got that phone call,” said O’Banion.

In November, she called a team meeting. “It was really hard for me to swallow at first and take in.”

During that meeting she broke the news to her team, news that she was battling Stage 2 Lymphoma. “There were some tears, there was heartbreak, we were sad, but we knew we had to stay positive.”

O’Banion is currently halfway through her chemotherapy treatments and has yet to miss a game this season.
