AVON, Ohio – Dozens of volunteers putting shovels in the ground, planting sunflower seeds in maria’s field of hope in Avon Sunday afternoon.

The field, now in its sixth year, was inspired by the memory of Maria McNamara, who died from a brain tumor at the age of seven.

Volunteers planted from 3 to 5 p.m. at Maria’s Field of Hope at 35135 Chester Road.

According to Maria’s parents, who started the organization, Sunday’s planting will yield sunflowers in September which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
