NEWPORT, Tennessee– A judge reversed a magistrate’s ruling that ordered a woman to change her baby’s name from Messiah to Martin.
WBIR reported it took the judge only 30 minutes to decide to overturn the ruling during an appeals hearing on Wednesday.
The judge had no comment on the decision.
In the original ruling, Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew Ballew wrote: “‘Messiah’ is a title that is held only by Jesus Christ” and that naming him this “places an undue burden on him that as a human being, he cannot fulfill.”
Her ruling also noted the large Christian population in the Tennessee county where the child was born.
The family is relieved about the new ruling.
