OU Investigates Powdery Substance in Mail

ATHENS, Ohio– Ohio University officials said a school employee opened an envelope received in the mail that contained a white, powdery substance.

It happened just after 11 a.m. Thursday.

The university said the Ohio University Police Department quickly evacuated the Legal Affairs and People’s Bank sections of the West Union Street Office Center and took other steps to isolate the affected area.

According to the university’s website, the employee who opened the envelope has been released from the hospital.

Police are working with an Ohio National Guard WMD team from Rickenbacker Air Force Base and the FBI, who is handling the criminal investigation.

Police said they believe no further action is required by Ohio University faculty, staff or students.

They also expect both buildings to reopen Friday morning.
