EAST LANSING, Michigan — The Ohio State Buckeyes grinded out a 17-16 win in East Lansing on Saturday afternoon as Urban Meyer won his first Big Ten game as head coach.
Braxton Miller had an up-and-down afternoon; he threw for 179 yards and ran for 136 more but threw an interception and lost a fumble.
Ohio State took the early lead on a Jordan Hall touchdown run which gave the Buckeyes a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and held a 7-3 lead into the break.
Michigan State added a field goal in the third quarter to cut the Buckeyes lead down to one and then Michigan State took its first lead when Keith Mumphery found Andrew Maxwell on a 29-yard pass giving the Spartans a 13 to 10 lead, but it wouldn’t last.
Late in the third, Miller aired it out for Devin Smith who scored on a 63-yard touchdown pass and the Buckeyes were back in business 17-13.
Michigan State added a field goal in the fourth to cut the lead to 17-16 but that is as close as they would get. Michigan State has lost four home games in a row against Ohio State and Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer becomes just the third OSU coach to start 5-0 in his first season at Ohio State.
The Buckeyes welcome Nebraska to Columbus next week as they continue Big Ten play. The Cornhuskers beat Ohio State in Lincoln last year after a 21-point second half deficit to win 34-27.
