WELLINGTON, Ohio –Troopers are investigating a morning crash involving a pickup truck and Amish buggy that killed a passenger of the buggy.

Both vehicles were traveling NB on SR 58 just south of Jones Rd in Wellington at 6:12 a.m. Wednesday when the pickup rear-ended the buggy, investigators said.

According to troopers, two people on the buggy were both ejected. The passenger, Jon Swartzentruber, 25, was killed and the driver of the buggy, Levi Shetler, 54, was taken to Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition, investigators said.

Investigators said the buggy was traveling legally in the roadway with proper markings when it was hit on its rear driver’s side. It appeared driver inattention may have been a factor, and vehicular manslaughter charges are possible against the driver of the pickup truck pending the outcome of the investigation, according to troopers.

Investigators said it’s unclear where the buggy was traveling at the time of the crash.
