COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio officials are backing up a safety push by providing some 9,300 bicycle helmets for children around the state.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is contributing $25,000 and the Ohio chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics is adding $14,000 for the effort.

It is part of the academy’s “Put a Lid on It!” bike helmet campaign. Bike Helmet Safety Awareness week is scheduled for May 2-10.

Organizations that distribute the helmets could get training sessions including how to properly fit children with helmets.

Officials say with warmer temperatures allowing more bicycling, they want to get helmets to children who might not be able to get them.
