WILMINGTON, Ohio (AP) — A police K-9 unit dog missing for nearly two months has been found safe.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the 2-year-old Wilmington police dog named Karson was found Sunday in a field in Clinton County in southwestern Ohio

The Belgian Malinois was reported missing on Dec. 23, 2014, when he escaped from an animal care center where he was being boarded while his police handler was out of town. Handler Jerry Popp says Karson had lost weight and had some redness on his paws but didn’t appear injured. The dog was being checked out by a veterinarian Sunday.

Scores of volunteers had searched for Karson over the past few weeks. Popp says Sunday was to have been the last day of the organized search.
