MONTVILLE TWP., Ohio -- Two accidents at the same place and on the same day in one Medina County community has leaders looking to the state for help.

Montville Township police cameras captured a crash between a car and a semi-truck at the intersection of Poe Road and State Route 57 on Dec. 21. The impact sent the vehicle into the path of a school bus. The driver in the car and the semi-truck were seriously injured, while the two people aboard the bus were not hurt.

Ten hours later that same day, there was another collision at the same intersection. Montville Township Trustee Ron Bischof said they've had trouble at this intersection for years.

“We have had seven accidents at this intersection this year,” he said.

There are double stop signs on Poe Road, but none for traffic going the other direction on State Route 57.

James Patterson, pastor of the Poe United Methodist Church that sits on one corner, calls it a dangerous intersection.

“We have had many accidents here.  We don't need a stop sign.  We need a stop light,” he said.

Montville Township trustee Ron Bischof would like nothing more than to see a traffic light at this intersection.  The township does not have jurisdiction because it involves a state route.

"I think people go through stop signs a lot easier than they would through a red light. And, I think that would be a good deterrent, “Trustee Bischof said.

The Township has made the same request for a traffic light in the past. Trustee Bischof said ODOT has denied it.

“They want to have their traffic flow. That's why they're not too interested in putting up a red light or signalization or even put stop signs up there. They want their traffic to flow,” Trustee Bischof said.

The cost of a new traffic light is estimated to be about $150,000. Trustee Bischof said the Township is willing to pay half, if it means a safer intersection.
