NEW YORK (WABC) — A 35-year-old woman on a first date fell to her death early Thursday morning when she fell from the balcony of her 17th floor New York City apartment.

Police say Jennifer Rosoff went outside on her balcony around 12:50 a.m. to talk and smoke a cigarette with her date when the balcony’s railing broke.

It’s unclear whether Rosoff leaned on it, causing it to give way.

Police say she landed on a second-story construction scaffolding of the building and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A neighbor heard it happen.

“Yeah, I was in bed and I heard the thud.  I didn’t know, I couldn’t imagine it was what it was,” said Sarah Shoburn.

The company that manages the building released a statement, offering its condolences to Rosoff’s family and friends.

A spokesman also said, “We are cooperating fully with the investigation into the cause of this terrible accident.”

Meanwhile, the New York City Department of Buildings said it is investigating and issued a vacate order for all balconies in the building as a precaution.
