ALLIANCE, Ohio -- A local police officer has extended his oath to serve and protect to the animal kingdom.

When Alliance Police Sgt. Wonner noticed a mother duck and her babies trying to cross busy East State Street earlier this week, he sprung into action to help the bird family.

Wonner parked his cruiser, stopped traffic and assisted the jaywalking ducks to safety on the other side of the road.

A posting on the APD's Facebook page joked that the ducks "were warned for the violation and released."
