Portland, OR (KPTV) — A Portland-area man said he feels extremely lucky after someone stole his bike from PCC’s Cascade campus because he got it back within a matter of hours.

And that’s not all. Along with the bike came an apology letter from the thief who stole it, plus $10 to help pay for a new lock after the thief broke the previous one.

In the letter, the man admitted to stealing the bike, being out of work and having problems with addiction.

The letter stunned bike owner Paul Gilmour.

“I had an amazing roller coaster ride of emotion today going from freaking out to wondering what happened to my bicycle that I don’t have the means to replace, being a student, to grateful and just in shock that I actually got my stolen bicycle back,” Gilmour said.

Gilmour said he now knows cable locks are not reliable.

Using the money he got with the letter, he went out and bought a U-lock for his bike.
