(WQAD) — A skunk made its way through the Aledo, Illinois Wal-Mart and nearby vending machines before being captured.

The skunk made its way in through the front door of the Wal-Mart Thursday, February 16, 2012 where it then hid behind a machine in the front foyer.

An employee reportedly tried to remove the skunk by poking it with a stick.

The skunk then sprayed at the employee and ran out of the door, leaving a rather unpleasant smell.

The manager of the neighboring Mercer Market says the skunk was coming for his door next.

“He went toward our doors, and we had turned the doors off so he couldn’t get in,” Steve McLaren said.  “He went to the first place he could find and that was the pop machines.”

Police were called, but they directed the business to contact a wildlife trapper to handle the situation.

Wildlife experts came to remove the skunk from the pop machine.

After the skunk found its way into a second pop machine; the expert eventually wrapped the machine in plastic, hauled it behind the store where he captured the skunk in a trap.

The manager said the wildlife expert then hauled the skunk away and released him.  He said the skunk was unharmed.

The odor still lingered around the area a day later.
