The first genetically modified fish has been declared safe for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to The Independent.
Scientists say the modified Atlantic salmon was created using genes from other fish and grows twice as fast as regular Atlantic salmon. They also say it poses no health or environmental risks. The decision reportedly may pave the way for genetically modified fish to be used for human consumption worldwide, namely Europe.
Opponents of the decision say the fast-growing fish, called AquAdvantage salmon, will have detrimental effects on other fish if accidentally released into the wild. They also say it will lead to “Frankenstein”-like versions of other animals for food.
The approval to consume the fish comes after a 17-year battle and many more years of research.
