NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio– Deby Cowden opened her mail on Wednesday to find a card.

It was a hand-written note from Michelle Knight, one of three women held captive by Ariel Castro.

The card said, “Dear D, thank you for helping me start my new life in a special way. I appreciate you thinking of me. Life is tough, but I am tougher. God bless you. Michelle Knight.”

“Honestly, and it still does; it brought tears to my eyes to know she would take the time to write to a complete stranger,” said Cowden.

It all started back in May. Cowden heard about Knight staying in the hospital, and decided to send her a card wishing her well.

“I felt bad for her. She was in the hospital alone. She only had strangers around her. She didn’t have a sister or a mother or a father,” she said.

Cowden said she didn’t think anything of her simple gesture, and figured she’d never hear back.

Now, she plans to write Knight again.

“It really touched me. I’m going to write her back and reach out to her. If she needs a friend. I don’t need anything from her. I just wish her all the best,” she said.

Cowden said her friend, who also wrote Knight, got a similar card in the mail.

Michelle also wrote a thank you note to Cleveland police. *Read that here*
