MEDINA, Ohio -- David Clardy is shocked and disappointed that someone would steal money from Spokes of Medina.

The non-profit organization employs people with developmental disabilities at their coffee and bike rental shop.

"I was really thinking 'wow, that’s a lot of money to us and how are we going to recover that money'?” said Clardy.

Clardy is the director for the program and said the thief took cash from the safe, the register and a donation jar. The donation jar was being used to raise money for an espresso maker.

He said if they got one of those, they’d be able to get more customers and stay open during the winter.

"Now the fund is back to zero,” he said.

Based on evidence at the scene and what police told Clardy, it appears the suspect broke in through a basement window.

It’s unclear when exactly the burglary happened, but it’s believed to have occurred sometime after the shop closed on Sunday.

"When I met with the folks that work here, their first response was that's not going to keep us down. We were closed on Monday and we were open again on Tuesday and they just said, you know what were coming in and were cleaning up,” he said.

The community has been just as supportive.

Laura Parnell, the owner at Cool Beans Café in Medina, started a GoFundMe.com page for the shop and is also planning to host a fundraiser on November 7.

"So far, we have 250 people who say they're coming to show support and get a cup of coffee and stand in solidarity with the business,” said Parnell.

Cardy said he and the rest of the staff are thankful for everyone’s kindness.

"The outpouring has been amazing and we had a meeting here this morning and I shared that with all the folks that work here, read them some of the comments from people and it was pretty special,” he said.
