CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The wicked winter storm hitting Northeast Ohio is causing crashes all over the area.

ODOT told our Suzanne Stratford that crews are out in full force but can't get to certain roads because of the accidents and visibility is a problem.

They are reminding drivers to be careful and go slow in whiteout conditions.

80 trucks are out in Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties; 121 trucks are clearing streets in Ashtabula, Summit, Portage, Stark, Trumbull and Mahoning counties; and 122 trucks are out in Ashland, Crawford, Erie, Huron, Lorain, Medina, Richland, and Wayne counties.

At Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, crews are working to clear the runways. United will cancel 40% of flights throughout the night and possibly more as weather remains an issue here and on the East Coast.

The weather conditions are also causing power problems for some residents. FirstEnergy reported more than 24,000 power outages around 5 p.m.; they're all across Northeast Ohio.

An estimated restoration time was not available.

Hundreds of schools across the viewing area also closed Wednesday because of the impending weather conditions.

Counties in Northeast Ohio are usually under a winter storm warning or a winter weather advisory until early Thursday morning.

Cleveland said it has 14,000 tons of salt to treat the roads. They’re asking people to stay on top of the weather and for drivers to give themselves extra travel time. They are also asking drivers not to block the intersections.

The city of Cleveland will monitor the weather and the impact on roads throughout the day and issue updates regarding progress and instructions for residents and staff, if necessary.
