SHEFFIELD LAKE – All six people on a boat in Sheffield Lake were rescued on Saturday after the boat caught on fire.

The incident happened on open water and the boat drifted behind the Erie Shore Landing apartment building.

According to the Sheffield Lake Fire Chief, a few people on jet skis were going by when the three adults and three children on the boat jumped off. The jet skis brought them to shore.

A woman on the boat called 911 before all six people put on life vests and jumped to safety. There were three children on the boat, ages 9, 13 and 16.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but will be better investigated once authorities remove the boat from the water.

Lorain Police water patrol was first on scene, Coast Guard and Avon Lake Fire Department also assisted.
