HUDSON, Ohio -- The FOX 8 I-Team is uncovering more about what happened just before and just after a Hudson police officer shot and killed a law student who had come to Northeast Ohio from the Middle East.

Friday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol released an accident report for a crash that happened on the turnpike just before the shooting. And, the I-Team reviewed police radio tapes from the incident.

Sunday, a Hudson police officer shot and killed Saif Nasser Mubarak Al Ameri, a 26-year-old from the United Arab Emirates. He was a law student at Case Western Reserve University.

Police said he crashed on the turnpike, got out, ran into some woods, and he died after getting shot in the head during some kind of “struggle” with the officer.

The crash report says Al Ameri was “passing traffic, lost control, drove off the left side of the roadway, came back into the roadway, and side-swiped” another vehicle. The report says Al Ameri’s car then flipped and struck a barrier. Then he took off on foot.

A witness told the Highway Patrol, Al Ameri was “acting strange” and having trouble standing up before he ran off.

Police video shows when Hudson officer Ryan Doran spotted the driver in the woods, he quickly pulled his gun and shouted commands to “stop” and “get on the ground." The officer also threatened multiple times to shoot. The actual shooting took place outside of the view of the camera.

Meantime, police radio recordings show frantic moments as the officer confronted the driver in the woods. Some of his radio transmissions couldn’t be made out by other officers. And they had trouble figuring out exactly where he was. At one point, the officer can be heard saying to dispatch, "Had a shooting. Got a suspect down." Then the dispatcher asks, "You were involved in the shooting?"

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is following up on all of this to determine what happened and if the shooting was justified. The medical examiner is waiting for results of toxicology tests on the man killed.
